The Old Salty Dog Right Under Our Nose

The Old Salty Dog
While recently watching an episode of “Man V Food”, Glenn and I were excited to see that a restaurant in Sarasota, Florida was featured:  The Old Salty Dog.  You see, we are usually in that part of Florida a couple times a year and we love to see and experience places that catch our attention on TV-in real life.  And The Old Salty Dog which serves up a fried hot dog with sauerkraut, bacon, 3 cheeses and some other stuff on top (can you say bring your pepcid????) looked like an inexpensive-outrageous culinary adventure to me!  I am in!

Sooo, when just a few days ago, we decided to take a spur of the moment road trip with the kids to Sarasota, I was excited to search for the Old Salty Dog.  And we were shocked to find that this restaurant is a short bike ride or long walk from where we always stay-actually right next to another restaurant at which we always eat!  We were headed there for lunch today and I guess that the TV exposure has been good for business because the line was out the door-Oh well, maybe I’ll get my salty dog tomorrow!  Stay tuned for details on this new culinary adventure.

Day 2-went back-earlier this time-and I got my salty dog!  Couldn’t imagine doing mine “all the way” so just got sauerkraut and grilled onions on my fried hot dog and here’s a picture:

Where's the dog???

I know what you are thinking-Uhhhhhh-where’s the dog?????  It’s in there.  In this picture you can at least see the side view and this view actually presents well what I ultimately thought was the best tasting part of my salty dog-the crispy ends.

Aha!

You see, the whole thing was actually quite tasty but the very ends stayed crispier than the inside.  The batter on the middle of the dog got softer as the hot dog sat and then it was kind of like a hot dog with stuff on it-still good just not as good-
